You can go to the gym, drink your water, and take your vitamins, but if you don’t deal with the stuff going on in your heart and head you’re still going to be unhealthy.
I was never much like other boys my age. I was much happier to sit reading for hours than to watch or play any kind of sport. I liked to cook and catch bugs, not do the "manly" things young boys were supposed to be into.
Most of the time that meant I felt alone and apart. Different. Ashamed. Less than.
This isn't a sob story intended to make you feel bad for me. (I know I'm very lucky compared to most.) It's to illustrate the point that life is hard. None of us makes it through undamaged in some way and fewer of us still ever learn skills to cope with our trauma in a healthy way.
Instead we soothe the pain with pills, with food, with alcohol, or one of a hundred other distractions.
I have always believed in the power of language and stories to shape our lives and the most important of those stories is the one we tell about ourselves.
This is why so many people fail with diet or exercise plans.
Because when life gets difficult they fall back on the only story of themselves they know. The one with that undealt with trauma in which they are somehow less than they want to be.
Things can be different. You are the author of the story of your life. You get to choose to write YOUR story as a triumph or a tragedy.
The first step to writing the story of your life the way you want it to be is to BELIEVE that you can.
That’s where we can help. Our program and coaches will challenge you to do things you may not have ever thought possible, and over time will demonstrate that with hard work and the right mindset you are capable of doing difficult things that might even scare you a little.
Once you have learned that lesson, the ability to write whatever story you want for yourself outside the gym is within your grasp.
My hope is you’ve already written the first sentence of your new story by coming here to read our blog. Now it’s just a matter of writing one more paragraph at a time.
Get Started with Us and then continue to show up and do the things that challenge you!
The growth that comes from overcoming challenges is the development of your character into the confident, capable protagonist of the new story you are writing for yourself.
